    Freelancers for the big newspapers may get paid a higher fee than those 
writing for smaller publications, but nowadays these papers want ALL rights, 
including electronic, for the pieces.  Believe me, it's a mixed bag writing 
for these publications!  Also, the pay is probably less than you think.  The 
Washington Post wanted to pay me only $200 for syndication rights (including 
the photographs) for an article I wrote for them.  For that fee, they would 
offer the piece to more than 200 publications - great visibility if it's 
picked up, but not great pay.  Having said that, I did negociate a 
respectable fee for the article and photographs in exchange for the extra 
electronic rights.
