RE: [GWL]: GWAA awards again

Fellow GWLers:  I have been discussing and forwarding the list conversations on the awards to Irene Virag, chairman of the awards for the second time so these means she has judged several times – and the garden editor of Newsday.  I have sent her these questions.

Irene,

As you can see from what I have been forwarding you, there seems to be some issues pertaining to the awards in general and the judging in particular that I thought you could clear up if you have time.

We could begin with:

Does everyone have a chance to win – whether you write for a regional weekly or a freelancer?

What is the best way to determine the categories for entering a piece?

How many different categories should I enter?

Can you briefly describe the judging process, particularly the objectivity of the judging.

How are the judges picked?

I wrote several chapters for one of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's

handbooks published this year (on container gardening) and would like to

submit at least one, maybe three, for an award.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'm elegible because the writing doesn't fit

clearly into any of the given sub-categories.  I'm looking at Category

1/Writing.  The publication itself is a book, but I didn't write the

whole book.  (If you're familiar with the BBG's handbook series, you'll

know that they're usually a compilation of chapters written by various

authors.)  Each chapter is a stand-alone article, more akin to magazine

writing.   Can I submit individual chapters and if so, to which

sub-category?

I may fall bewteen the cracks with this one but thought I'd ask before

giving up.

Thanks,

Ellen Zachos
