I think having to choose topics that are appealing to both novice and
experienced gardeners is one of the toughest parts of writing.
Those who write for magazines can target their readership, but
articles appearing in newspapers have to seesaw between both.
I get sick of "do this, do that" writing and I think other gardeners
are becoming tired of it too. Gardeners are so much more
sophisticated nowadays - garden clubs, internet, radio, tv - it's a
deluge of information.
The first area of budgeting in any published forum is space. Cut back
on the number of pages, cut back the cost. Advertisements rule.
What's the editor going to run - your article on how to overwinter
geraniums or the story about the local pedophile?
Garden writing has to be informative, inspirational and fresh and yeah, I
think controversy is something people hunger for...as well as the
occasional scientific slant, and profiles of real gardeners.
>I still think the answer to the declining market for gardening
> literature is to mount a campaign to educate editors and publishers about
> the numbers and buying power of gardeners.
That too is a good idea.
