Re: [GWL]: The decline of garden writing

Linda:

In the past 15 years there has been a revolution in gardening.  It has changed it and made it easier...but gardeners need to understand it.  For example...20 years ago we were all using dirt...better identified as soil...in plantings and potting mixes.  Now virtually all of our potting mixes are peat-lite mixes.  Do gardeners know how to handle these mixes?  Do they realize that they are biologically somewhat inert and that if some microbes are added their plants may just live longer and grow better?  Do they realize that fungus gnats thrive in these soils and have become an endemic problem with prepared potting mixes?  Do they realize that fungus gnat larvae can kill plants?  Do they know how easy it is to get rid of them?  And finally, have you told them?
Just ten years ago the bulk of pesticides we used were somewhat persistent and would kill insects for weeks or months.  Most household and plant insecticides are probably now pyrethrin based.  Do gardeners know that these are only contact insecticides and most have absolutely no residual effects?  Have you told them?
