Re: [GWL]: Master Gardeners

Carla, and others,

Don't get me wrong on the Master Gardener issue. I love MG's and the
program they do is very useful. MG's tend to be on average somewhat younger
than the folks in the garden clubs, and they are in it because they really
do love gardening. What I object to is that they take writing jobs away from
professional writers, and since they do their columns for free, it's easy to
see how this is appealing to newspapers.
People in some MG programs have told me too, that they don't like it
that they can't do fund raisers. Any non-profit group, garden club or
whatever, that can raise some funds, has much more freedom to do things. As
such, garden clubs are quite democratic and MG groups are not very.
But again, some really wonderful people are MG's and speaking to them is
always fun (if not very remunerative) since they are knowledgeable about
gardening, interested, and they ask many intelligent questions.
