One of my favorite topics a number of years ago was T&M and the viability of their seeds. At the time I interviewed their US exec. who was Bruce Sangster, but I don't know if he's still with the company. They did get burned by the amount of bad press (remember, a little controversy?) and feedback they got from the US market and as a result they drastically reduced the number of offerings in their catalog with the philosophy that to keep customers happy(ier) they would only offer easier to germinate seeds. It is true however that perennials can be very tricky...at least some of them...in germination. I always suggest to my readers that if they are serious about growing perennials from seed they need to get a copy of Norman Deno's book on germination. He hasn't gotten much press in the Hort community but his research is second to none and his information is priceless.
As for the seed, go directly to Klaus Jellito. He's the worlds top supplier of perennial seeds and his catalog is a gold mine for germination tips as well. He's done extensive work on seed storage and has the best seed storage facilities and protocols in the world.
Remember also that most states require seed suppliers to annually test their seeds for germination rates. We use to see these rates on seed packets but I never see them anymore. I go bonkers when I go into a garden center and they are selling grass seed that's got the previous years testing information on it and I always demand that they pull the old supplies off the shelf...and constantly remind my readers to watch for these dates. Now, is anyone at our state ag departments checking up on these tests? I seriously doubt it.
