Re: [GWL]: garden writing
I agree that the internet is creating some competition, although many people
still are not yet confident with using a search engine such as google to
find the information they need, or at least information from reliable
sources, so it may not be the competition on a mass scale but more for the
"early adopters" at this stage of the game. HGTV (and I am using that in the
generic sense) is actually helping to pull more mainstream people into the
internet readership pool, too.
I see the internet as a two edged sword and I am still not sure what I think
the long term effect will be. Possibly a new market for writers although
there is so much material that is being recycled, certainly a new market for
photographers due to reduced cost of publishing the pix and increased demand
for graphics. There is a lot of content out there that is being "reprinted"
over and over again, there is a lot that is new and terrible, there is a lot
being done for free or close to it, there is some that is excellent. And
some of it is even being paid for. I think it is an exciting venue and will
have some more fits and starts before all is said and done. One interesting
approach right now is the magazine and about.com working in tandem. Another
is nationalgardening which ceased printing in favor of the internet and
syndication. The opportunities for immediacy and interactivity are so
exciting and I think we have yet to take full advantage of the
possibilities -- let alone capitalize on them.
On the other hand, when I look at many of the newer gardening books being
published, I find that they are attractive and full of photos and not much
meat. Or, they are oriented to the national market rather than a regional
one and much of the material is so general as to be not helpful. I do not
like to buy those books because they do not endure, for me anyway.
Also, how many gardening books does the average yardener need or even want?
I think the point is coming or maybe here where the general market is just
plain saturated.
How many people are actually going to want to read or buy the latest
speciality book on say alpines or indepth treatment of ferns or whatever?
For the majority of gardeners, those books are so specialized they are not
of general interest. It doesn't matter if they are great books, the market
is finite.
