[GWL]: garden writing

Yes, yes, yes, let's hear from others on this. That sameness is blunting a
lot of us. And, yes, the lack of controversy -- or, let's say, even the lack
of differing opinions, doesn't have to be controversial at all -- is
obvious. Maybe we have become boring. The quality of the writing is good in
general, but many of the overall products seem to suffer from the same
homogeneity that makes travelers wonder what U.S. city they're in.
The closest I've come to writing controversially, recently, was about
lawns. It's very PC right now to trash Americans' love affair with lawns.
Well, if someone wants to spend hours perfecting their lawn, so be it.
That's their choice. Lawns aren't the problems; incorrect cultural practices
are, and by incorrect I mean wrong amounts and wrong timing, not wrong
products. But that was a column, so my opinion was allowed. For a story
format, the person being interviewed would have to feel that way and say so.
I like the idea of letting, say, a land-grant university horticulturist
pen his/her opinions on the same page as a environmental purist, and will
approach higher-ups with the idea. We'll see what level of controversy
they'll allow. I'll report back on the reaction.
Does anyone think readers are saturated with the basics? Here, so many
people move to Florida every day that we are constantly asked for such info.
That leaves out the more experienced gardeners. What if everyone on this
list does an informal survey of gardening friends, relatives and neighbors
and asks what type of garden literature they are reading, what they want to
read and what they don't want to read. The results might be interesting. (Am
going to ask if I can pose these questions in the master gardener
newsletter.)
