[GWL]: Maybe it is the publisher

I am very embarrassed at my lousy memory, so Andy or Doug help me here. I
am remembering a terrific writer in the mid-80's who wrote controversy in
every other one of her columns. And where was this weekly column? - The
Wall Street Journal. This lady was read first by a bunch of high ranking
financial powers on the day her column came out because she was such a very
good writer and was willing to take on anyone. She generated flak and the
letters to the editor were published. New York City garden writing, perhaps
all of garden writing will never be as colorful, as interesting, and as
informative, all at the same time. She was the one who taught me about
putting coffee grounds as mulch on gardenias. I feel terrible that I can't
remember her name; moving toward mid-sixties can be a real pain in the butt.
But thinking through her run of five or six years of great and often
controversial columns, it was her editor and her publisher who gave her a
free hand. If the advertisers have any true influence, than the editor and
the writer will always be crippled. If advertising is so hard to come by
today causing publishers to pull in the barbs and arrows, then maybe that is
where the cause of the problem rests and I sure don't see any apparent
solution. The sad part is that once the advertisers are given that power to
control, they will never give it up.
All we need now is for one of us to win the lottery and start a magazine
designed to break even on subscriptions only. Then we publish a rip snorter
of a book each month that takes on the sacred cows and tells all kinds of
exciting biased well written stories. Now would that be fun or what?
I'm still depressed.
Later,

Jeff
