Re: [GWL]: The decline of garden writing

To All,

I don't think many of us have failed our readers, but I have found some garden writers to be somewhat narrow minded, and not open to many new ideas.
I have also found a number of garden writers who are perhaps too quick to keep repeating old garden information, while ignoring new data.
In a few of the very largest magazines and newspapers, some garden writers have responded to my work, in such a way as though it seems ( to me at least) as though they just wish I'd go away. Since my writing and research (on allergies & plants) puts definite health equations on individual plants, some garden writers have acted as though I'm trying to limit their choice of plant materials. And although I understand no one likes restrictions, I feel that ignorance is not bliss by any means. The truth should get out there, restrictive or not.
As the Baby Boomers get older (I'm one myself) and greyer, gardening should become ever more important, not less. As more folks retire, there's more time to garden. Many people become increasingly interested in health as they age, and I expect that garden writers would do well to explore much deeper the many connections--  between gardening and health.
When I read a garden article that impresses me enough so that I clip it out and save it, I know that was a good article. When I was in college and used to borrow trade magazines from my horticulture professors, I saw that very often the most useful articles had already been clipped and removed by some earlier reader. If we write more articles that are important and highly useful, ones worth clipping, our writing will be filling real needs.
At any rate, I expect gardening and garden writing to be more popular than ever in the not too distant future.

All these threads relating the number of newspapers that have reduced or eliminated gardening columns and gardening articles is frightening and should give us reason to pause and think.  It seems that the reductions began long before the current economic situation.  There also appears to be a substantial reduction of editorial pages in gardening magazines...as well as a reduction in the number of magazines.
Is it time for us to explore the role of garden writers in this dilemma?  Have we let our readers down?  Have we failed to cultivate readers and keep them involved and educated?  Have we completely failed to stimulate them?  Have we as garden writers simply...failed?
