Re: [GWL]: The decline of garden writing

I've been pondering trends in the garden and outdoor living area and it
occurs to me that some niches are declining...while others are growing.
There is a shift during tough economic times to be very conscious that the
editorial content fits the advertisers' and consumer's desire for
information about topics related to the flow of their money. Thus, while
garden writing might be wonderful, helpful and enticing...if garden
advertisers don't have as much money to spend on advertising as movie
theaters...guess which kind of editorial will be emphasized?

I would suggest we all take a look at niches that are doing well in these
tough times...and also keep an eye on when the recovery will take place.
And some old timers among us might tell us about past cycles that brought
gardening and outdoor rec back into the mainstream of the flowing stream of
cash... It looks like a cyclical swing to me...

Sometimes things are about the practical use of resources...not about
quality or preferences. And I think that might be happening now....just a
personal opinion based on my experience working with magazines and
advertisers over the years.

What do you think?
Best regards,
Carolyn
