A colleague of mine has been collecting Books on
Gardening dating back to the 1600's. The text is very much the same throughout
this period as it is today. There is the transition from food production for
human need to planting to improve esthetics, but the general farming practices
are similar. The noticeable change is the Introduction of New Plants, whether it
was for the gardener in the 1600's to produce more produce for his
Family,by using these New Cultivars or the revolution of the Introduction of the
Newest Tulip, worth more in the late 1800's than any appreciating stock
market. The 1930's and 1940's slowed innovative plant research to a trickle
,until the Marshall Plan of the Post World War 2 Era. Plants became important
again, for active Food Production and as part of the re-building of the
European Continent. Late in the 20th century and early into the 21st century,We
have, the phenomenon of the richest and most highly educated
population ever ,coupled with them being the largest percentage of the
entire population. And they are on earth at
the same time. They desire beauty and instant gratification and have the money
to pay for it. They don't want to get dirty. They have discovered or been
brainwashed into recognizing New Is Better. New Movies,New Cars,New Software,New
digitally produced Beatles C.D's.,and of course E-mail and the internet. The
largest percentage of the Gardening public is Female and she would like to read
about and be able to purchase New and Exciting products for the outdoor living
space that add Beauty and enhance the Garden Experience.
