Jeff, good point. My partner, Nancy Szerlag has a column in the Detroit
News Homestyle section every week. She couldn't syndicate it because the
column is so personalized and opinionated about Michigan gardening that it
must stay in Michigan. When Gannet tried to get all columnists to shift to
work for hire across the country, Nancy and three other popular columnists
in the Homestyle section refused and the company gave in. It turns out the
Homestyle Section each Saturday is the most profitable section in the
Newspaper. It has one feature article and then about ten columnists on all
the topics, gardening, home repair, pets, life in general, etc. That said,
Nancy used to make a little money doing features for the Homestyle Section
and for the newspaper on other days; all that has stopped and is done
inhouse by people who know nothing about gardening and put out bad
information as a result. So there it is; the good regional, very personal
column hangs in there, but the other garden writing opportunities got cut
back because of budget constraints.
The southern Jeff in Michigan.

An interesting thread this one on boring garden writing and the need for
controversy.
I have been writing a weekly newspaper column in the same paper for 25
years. Those who know me won't be surprised that in the slug they call it a
"Garden/opinion column" so at least my paper seems to respect and if
longevity says anything, like, controversy. I don't hold back on killing
dandelions, let me tell ya! And nothing lets the paper know that people are
reading the column than a few nasty letters to the editor about the damn
garden columnist.
These guys can buy a canned non controversial garden column in twenty
different places. And judging from some of the comments here, they are
doing just that. It is your controversy that makes you different, local if
you want to be, and relevant to readers.
Just my opinion, of course.
Cheers,
Jeff L
