Re: [GWL]: newspapers & Master Gardener columns

Gerald,

I too notice the use of Master Gardeners as (free) garden columnists in
many newspapers. I love Master Gardeners but I have had a problem with them
in other regards too.
In many areas, MG's have replaced the local state garden clubs. The MG's
are organized by paid state employees and the MG's themselves are often
strongly discouraged from raising any club funds. Thus I often get requests
to come and talk to MG groups but they almost never want to pay any sort of
honorarium and if they even offer to cover gas money it is unusual. The MG
groups normally have speakers who they get for nothing from the ranks of the
state extension employees.
Garden clubs on the other hand, do fund raising and are always happy to
pay an honorarium to the speaker, and almost always try and help with travel
expenses as well.
My problem is this: State sponsored Master Gardeners (working for free
as a hobby) ought not to be competing with professional garden writers.
