Re: [GWL]: why so hostile about design?

Goodness me! Why do so many of you seem to be so hostile towards anybody who's design oriented? Let me ask: why do so many American gardeners sigh over British garden magazines and books? The answer is that there they pay attention to design, and over on this side of the pond, we have tended to ignore design, being satisfied with mass produced, lowest common denominator stuff, the same old mass produced foundation plants no matter where you live, and now plastic fencing and decking, and on it goes. Martha gets a lot of flack, much of it undeserved in my opinion -- I credit her for raising the design awareness of middle America, and 'that's a good thing'.

So what's wrong with picking an exterior paint colour that compliments your plants. Let's have more fun with design. Gardens aren't just about growing things, they are also about designing successful and appealing outdoor spaces.
