RE: [GWL]: Digest for Gardenwriters@topica.com, issue 287

<<<<Am I missing something or has gardening taken a back
seat to interior and exterior design on HGTV?>>>>>

Ah, my fellow Jeff,

You have noticed it, too. It is called the leap frog effect. Gardening is
used to secure an audience and then the audience is slowly shifted, subtly
into something related, but not quite the same but much more lucrative for
the shiftor.

Why would TV be any different than newspapers? Remember when we used to have
spring "home and GARDEN" sections, now spring "HOME and garden" sections.
Gardening becomes filler because they can sell more HOME advertising than
gardening advertising and in the end, it all comes down to money.

In point of fact the better you become at gardening, the less of a novice,
the less you buy--except for plants. A good garden columnist puts him or
herself out of business because nurseries don't advertise enough.

In fact, we are really becoming obsolete and what is taking our place is not
the home section stuff, though it is out there. It is the tech stuff.
Again, once you become a good gardener, you are happy. Once you become good
at the tech stuff, you need to learn more. No matter how old you are, that
tech column and that tech section in the paper, may be useful and what is
more important, generates a car load of advertising revenue.

Pretty soon HGTV will be full of computer stuff. Watch for it in a
complicated home theater near you.

Cheers,

Jeff L who lives where it is -12 degrees and really dark.
