Re: [GWL]: Inadequate compensation
Keith asked about compensation and the troubles of getting paid.
Simply put, if a magazine doesn't pay within 45 days, I never work for them
again. If I work for a magazine on a regular basis, I expect that my rate
of pay will increase with their comfort level--meaning, when they discover
that I meet deadlines and turn in clean copy that is on target, I expect
they recognize my competence by raising my rate of pay. There are always
several levels of payment--all geared to who it is, how they perform and/or
how bad the article is needed.
On the other hand, I recognize reality. Magazines pay according to their
circulation, upon which their advertising rates are based. So I don't
expect a magazine with 150,000 circulation to pay $3 a word. If I write for
the smaller publication that pays 40 or 50 cents a word, I do so because I
like their forum, their editorial freedom or I'm getting out a message I
want readers to see.
On a positive note, several magazines have raised their pay rates in the
second half of this year, recognizing that inflation is a factor. One
editor said that they were only trying to catch up with inflation and
thanked her writers for their patience. So....I think there is a conscious
effort out there of trying to be fair to writers.
