Here are the latest numbers we have gotten from NGA --

Gardening is the most popular outdoor hobby in America. 

According to Bruce Butterfield, head of market research for the National Garden Association, the Lawn & Garden industry is estimated to generate more than $50 billion in retail sales annually.  That’s twice as much spent on gardening than on spectator events and three times as much as on movies.

According to a 1999 economic study by the US government (the most recent):

•         $16.5 billion was spent on flowers, seeds and potted plants

•         $6.8 billion on movies

•         $7.6 billion on spectator events, including football, baseball and basketball

Garden writers drive the green economy.

Ya’ll get ready.  Gardening is about to explode!

Gerri,

I have not seen a NGA survey recently but in the late 90's the total figure

spent on lawn and garden was something around $26 billion.  That figure does

not include the costs of lawn care by outside companies which is something

between $6 and $10 Billion.  Of the $26 billion my memory is that over half

is spent on lawn care - fertilizer and pesticides and lawn mowers mostly.  I

think you can say the Americans spend over $20 billion on lawns one way or

another.

Everyone loves to hate Martha, who is laughing all the way to the bank. We

did an informal reader's poll last year before adding her column to our

weekly garden page; we ran a sample column and asked readers to call if they

wanted us to continue. I got 87 calls in 4 days; a record here. It was a

landslide of "yays," a few virulent "nays" and one "undecided"  who said

she'd like to see it only if we didn't have to pay for it, because "Martha

makes too much money already."

(We pay $10 per column for the copy and a photo.)

Question: I've never had the $$$ to buy the NGA(?) garden survey, but recall

hearing that a very significant percent of the multiple millions Americans

spend on "gardening" goes for lawn care. Does anybody know if that's true?
