[GWL]: Garden Globe Awards
Derek St Romaine
I have been having a discusssion with Derek Fell about The GWAA Garden
Globe Awards and the fact that it is made very difficult for overseas
members to enter. I copied the original e-mail below to Larry Hodgson
National Director of Region VII who said he would take the matter up at
a meeting in March. I also copied it to a few other people I know who
work in North America including a colleague Graham Rice who told me
about this forum. I would be interested to hear other points of view.
For the last few years I have coordinated the GWG Photography Awards and
as a consequence refrained from entering myself until this year when I
passed it on to my successor on th GWG Committee. During this time I
have been tempted to enter the GWAA awards but have been thwarted by the
entry conditions which state that 'only works originally copyrighted in
North America are eligible for entry'.
Being a photographer who has work published in North America
predominantly through books which are first published in the UK, I don't
very often get to see the American versions and the same goes with
magazines. Being a member of the GWAA who lives in the UK and has work
published in many European books and magazines, I feel excluded
somewhat unfairly from taking part in these annual awards. Surely the
point of having these awards is to promote and recognise excellence in
all forms of media throughout our industry wherever it may be.
In the UK we like you open our awards to anyone, not just members of the
GWG, thereby encouraging interested parties to join us, but we also
allow entries to be published worldwide. I can see that this may cause
some problems with language, but up until now I don't think it has
caused the photography awards any problems as photographs are understood
universally.
Perhaps you could start a discusion with our colleagues in America about
opening up the Garden Globe Awards so that they are in fact global and
don't stop within the shores of North America therefore discriminating
against your gardening colleagues who do work globally!
