Thanks for the kind words, Gene.

I dunno about it being an article; not unless there's an editor looking for a piece on how to be a freelance garden writer. :-)

It wasn't hard to put together, though. One of the things I do in my e-course on how to freelance is stress the rules of the game. It's all part of the every-so-important editor relations. You have to stay on their good side, and always, always, remember the editorial golden rule:

The editor's got the gold, so the editor makes the rules!

That should be engraved on every erstwhile freelancer's watchfob.

Or, to phrase it another way.

Rule #1: The editor is always right.
Rule #2: For those times the editor is wrong; see Rule #1.

Every editor has his/her own worldview. But I don't know one of them who doesn't have this at the top of their commandments list:

Thou shalt not provide somebody else's work and call it your own original writing. (how's that for bringing this back on topic?). In most fields I've worked in, you get to do that once. Not only do you lose that editor as a market, but the word goes out, and you start getting rejects that might otherwise have been sales. But in the garden writing world, it seems to be a widespread practice, and people either don't notice, or don't mind.

Anyway, happy holidays to you and yours, and to everyone on the garden writer's list.

Brook
