Pat,
I agree that as garden writers we have considerable influence and might even 
be able to shape gardening trends. People are always wanting to know what's 
"in." If enough of us told them that green petunias and purple marigolds are 
the hot new craze for 2002, I'll bet retailers would get a lot of requests 
for them. I also think gardening will actually increase in reponse to people 
staying close to home and cocooning this year, so maybe it wouldn't hurt for 
us to promote that notion a little. "Gardening is the hot new craze for 
2002." Perhaps we could even get Martha to say it. The more interest in 
gardening, the better for all of us.
