Many of us have been using that idea for years - that gardening is the number one leisure time
occupation in the country - or that, in other words, gardening is hot.

The trouble lies in what people think of as gardening. To some it is mowing and edging the lawn.
To others it's putting out that annual flat of impatiens. It's going to take Martha to convince
those people that gardening is a hot trend. But they are the people who swell the figures to make
it appear that gardening is more popular than it is.

However, there may be other ways to make gardening "hot." It's creation of a sense of place, the
sense of accomplishment it gives us, its value in fighting stress. And for the many, many aging
baby boomers its contribution to things like keeping fine motor skills tuned, and of all the
beauties we can enjoy even if one of our senses - usually sight or hearing - is waning and yet we
can still find joy in a garden.

I don't think we can just push "gardening" as the hot topic. We have to tie it into other trends.
