I'm the one who sighed. And I probably have gotten more mileage out of articles on yard art that
anyone but Felder. Check the gallery of several years worth of Tacky Yard Art contest entries on
my site and you'll see. Some of it is wonderful - like Susi Torre-Bueno's Flamingo Parade, and
some is bloody awful.
But my fear is that people are using decorations to replace plantings rather than to compliment
them. And many of the entries in my contest seem to bear this out. Concrete collections on a
concrete pad - maybe a bit of lawn or bare dirt. Very few plants.
If we're counting those dollars as money spent on gardening then we have to refigure somehow
because for many it is replacing the garden. All of our local garden centers have replaced part
of the area where they once sold plants with "gift shops" full of yard art - the only bright spot
being that some of this area is filled with pots that could hold plants. I've seen a couple
people using those as ornamental trash cans instead.
