Go to http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/course/ent591k/berlese.htmllese ...with
the following modernizations.
First, use a "grapejuice/cranberry" juice type container---the kind you get
in the non-refrigerated drinks section or a large softdrink bottle which may
be better because the kids can duplicate more readily at
home(unfortunately)and a large yogurt cup. The bottle/container will fit
easily in the yogurt cup and be supported so you won't need the tape and
stick apparatus to hold the two together.
It helps to use compost or really good soil the first time. A few magnifying
glasses or loops will be in order. Warning: YOU may never want to put your
hands in soil again. There are some really frightening critters down
there---microarthopods that are really scary!
Hey and just taking a slice of potato and laying it on the soil surface for
a few days is a fun activity. When you lift it up and look at it, some neat
larvae will be on it.....
Counting worms found one foot squares of different habitat is always fun.
Little kids get
"worm licenses" that allow them to hunt worms---catch and release of course!
Cheers,
Jeff
