Re: B&Bs near Dumbarton Oaks
Well, Dumbarton Oaks is in the north part of Georgetown...I've done a
Google search and am not finding any B&Bs in Georgetown. Georgetown
is primarily extremely expensive homes and commercial.
If your friend is coming in July, she needs to make sure the air
conditioning is working well, wherever she stays:-) That's about our
hottest month! I would also recommend, if her stay is near the 4th
of July, that she make reservations well in advance. Somewhere
around half a million people come to the Mall for the fireworks on
the 4th and summer is the big tourist season in DC. She also needs
to check on the garden's opening hours, seems to me they are not open
all the time.
Dumbarton Oaks is lovely at about any season, really. July will not
be a peak for flowering, I fear, but the grounds are well worth a
visit any time. There is no refreshment stand there and the grounds
are quite hilly - lots of steps; something to keep in mind. Lots of
restaurants 10 or so blocks farther down the hill in Georgetown, but
the gardens are in a residential neighborhood.
Here's one in Woodly Park - not too far away; too far to walk, but
not the other side of town.

The Kalorama Guest House might be a good one. Again, not exactly in
walking distance, but not all that far away and has gotten some good
reviews...

The Adams Inn is another possibility - in Adams-Morgan district.

Shipman House Bed and Breakfast - is more in Capitol Hill - the other
side of town, but from a user review, has a garden and the person
said it was very good.

There are hotels in Georgetown (not inexpensive) but within walking
distance of the garden.....if transportation is an issue. There is
metro bus service (not fabulous) and the subway, but I don't think
there is a subway stop in Georgetown, so if your friend will not have
a car, then it's bus or taxi from any of the above B&Bs. Unless, of
course, your friend does a lot of walking as a matter of course.
Personally, I wouldn't walk across the Rock Creek Park (which
separates Georgetown from most of the rest of the city) to get
anywhere as it isn't the safest hike in the world, but......
