Re: Graham Rice's notice:
The doyenne of vegetable writing, Joy Larkcom has won the prestigious
Garden Writers' Guild Lifetime Achievement Award for 2003. The prolific
author and columnist who is credited with popularising Chinese vegetables
in the UK . . .
I am thrilled to learn that Joy Larkcom was recognized by the Garden Writer's Guild and received this award. Joy was an invited speaker at the Natural Resources Days at Michigan State where I met her briefly, saying that I was coming to Cambridge for a major worm conference in 1984. She encouraged me to contact her. When in was in Cambridge, Joy was taking Chinese, preparing for a coming trip to China. She would put her bike on the train, then bike to her destination in Cambridge. She invited me to visit her home, gave me a tour of her gardens, and we took photographs of her worm bin. I was traveling with Mary Frances Fenton, and I remember sitting on the floor in their living room with her family sharing photographs of Chaco Canyon and the SW Indian pueblos taken by Mary Frances. It was a delightful sharing of family and cultures. They got out atlases and maps to locate where the photographs were taken.
Among all of her other activities, Joy had a modest market garden and would cut mixed greens, selling them to local restaurants and elsewhere. What wonderful news to learn through this garden writers list that Joy Larkcom's creativity, tenacity, versatility, and standards of excellence have been duly acknowledged by her peers! I can certainly add generosity and hospitality to the list of her attributes.
