Nan...I have experience with self publishing (and independent publishing). I'm an experienced editor and book designer, and I recently helped start the new independent publishers association here in Los Angeles. If I can answer questions about the opportunities and challenges involved in self publishing, I'd be happy to.
A couple books to start you off, that offer lots of good evaluation information include:
Dan Poynter, The Self-Publishing Manual
Lots about the technical aspects of turning your info into books...and some about marketing
www.parapublishing.com
John Kremer, 1001 Ways to Market Your Book
A lot of ideas about how to promote and sell your books...and develop your writing credentials
www.bookmarket.com
Both these authors are well respected in the self/independent publishing circles and have valuable information to share. The also both have web sites and free email newsletters.
There are specific "ways" to successfully self-publish. Do you want to sell your materials at the "back of the room" when you give lectures, etc. Do you have a large network (and mailing or email list) of supportive readers (based on news/mag writing, etc) that would buy your books. Or do you want to sell through bookstores or libraries? These are three distinctly different approaches to publishing...and affect how you write, edit and design your book.
I'd be happy to participate in a discussion about these opportunities here on the list.

Questions for all of you who have experience in self publishing:Carolyn Allen
Did you hire a book designer to do the layout?
How did you find a good printer?
Did you hire an editor/copyeditor?
Do you do the fulfillment yourself or do you use a fulfillment house? (and reasons for your decision)
What is the minimum printing you suggest and how much should one be prepared to pay?
