Hall of Shame

Christopher Lindsey's idea of a Hall of Shame is a terrific idea. We should share the names of thieves so we know to be vigilant.

Not only are images used without permission or compensation, but articles and book chapters are often lifted. That's why I Google myself monthly. Last summer, I found a huge real estate investment company was using one of my article (with my byline, no less!) on their site. Of course, they never asked permission or paid me for reprint rights. I emailed them with a threat of legal action, and my material came down. Then I wrote them a letter with a CC to my attorney asking for X dollars for the time they used my material. I got a check in a couple of weeks. This is a good story. I haven't been as lucky with others. But, I do aggressively pressure them to take down my material and most do. Payment is a different story. Everyone thinks they have the right to intellectual property for free, it seems.

Christopher, can you share with us how you make your images theft-proof? I had a web site in the late 1990s, but I took it down because my pix were being lifted by others.
