RE: Fran...Help for "weird things happening to your computer"(don't read this Andrew)

Thanks to all who helped with suggestions.

I still don't know what caused the problems but all is working again after a
visit to the computer store. I use the Mac to do my newsletters in Quark.
The computer guy said the hard drive was full of junk and he cleaned it up.
He said that just happens when you use the computer a lot. Does that make
sense?

On the PC, I couldn't use the links in the e-mails and NetScape had stopped
working. This turned out to have been the result of my husband attempting to
install Mozilla/Fire Fox (without telling me first)! When he uninstalled it,
all the problems disappeared. I would like to be able to use Fire Fox,
however, since it works well on other PC's and the Mac. Any ideas here?

Fran

----- Hi Claude,

You mentioned Norton detected a problem. Norton detected a "problem" on my
system. Attempts to repair caused all sorts of other difficulties. I was
told by my computer boffin that my Norton had collected so many updates via
downloads that it didn't know what it was doing anymore. We trashed that
Norton version. Bought the newest one (cause we do like Norton) and the
problem just disappeared.
I wonder if this akin to your to advice re older software.
BTW Thanks for taking the time to respond to Fran's query.

... when Norton detected a problem and I attempted to fix it. The result was
that the OS 9 would not boot forcing me to reformat the drive. I just
installed OS 10.3 rather than do an install from the original CDs. OS 10.3
is stable and you should have no problem with the look and feel of the new
OS. There is a problem in that some older software do not have versions
that will work in OS 10.3 and this may force you to develop workarounds.
