Daffodils in California

I often get gardening questions from visitors to my website. I received the following question that I don't know the answer to.

My sister wants daffodils for spring. She lives in Novato, California just north of San Francisco, mild climate, some nights in the 30's with frost but not much. I told her December is too late to plant for spring bloom.

She bought some at a nursery and they told her she could plant them in Dec or early Jan and still get bloom. I don't believe this but she bought 100 of them and wants me to plant them now.

If there's somebody on this list from that part of world, please let me know what you think. I'm sure I read somewhere that pre-chilled daffodils are sold for southern gardeners. Would that be the case? Please email me off-list if you have thoughts on this, so we don't have gardening discussion on this garden-writing list.

Thanks, Yvonne
