As a long-time planter of narcissus in Southern California, I can vouch that 
December is not too late to plant. In the hottest areas--Riverside--San 
Bernardino and the low desert-- late planting may suffer from early May heat--temps 
can get into the high 90s and even 100 degrees. Polyanthus narcissus 
(paperwhites) and other small flowered narcissus may live with this heat better than 
the medium cup and giant trumpet daffodils. In general, however, all the 
narcissus clan will make it if planted in December and even into January with some 
degree of success.  Novato is much farther north and they won't have the 
miserable heat probelms that we have, so I would think any of the narcissus could be 
safely planted this month  or next, although bloom time might be quite late. 
It isn't necessary to pre-chill any of the narcissus family.

And if they don't bloom this year, they will next year, but early, with the 
polyanthus narcissus blooming as early as December, the larger cups and giant 
trumpet blooming in February or March.

My polyanthus narcissus have just about finished blooming, andfthe giant 
trumpet kinds are about six inches tall now.

Also none of the narcissus kinds need to be taken up at the end of the season 
in Southern Califorrnia or most of the northern part of the state.
