A thought for the fiscally-challenged among us.

I'm in the midst of moving my computer systems to linux and have
discovered that GIMP - the linux photoshop equivalent is a free download
and that there is a windows version that runs quite nicely (tried it).
While Gimp may not be the equal to photoshop for high-end print work,
for all of my webwork it is way more than what I need.(and the free
price is pretty nice as well) - google it for download.

And the other significant note is that I had a Minolta Dimage slide
scanner that used to work fine on W98 but refused to budge on WinXP.
For some unknown reason, I didn't throw it out and I've discovered the
XSane graphics software (basic linux version) has all the necessary
drivers to run this and almost every other older scanner. I don't know
if Xsane runs on Win software but if you do have older scanners around
that no longer run, you may want to investigate this software.
Alternately, try setting up an older computer to run linux and this
software (or a dual boot system like I currently have where both systems
are running on the same computer).

Two inexpensive options for the holiday season.

With wishes that the simple gifts of life will be yours this season,

Doug
