GIMP (argh, shades of Pulp Fiction running through my mind -- not what I
usually think about first thing in the morning) is also available for
Windows and MacOS X, so if you're not willing to move to Linux you can
still enjoy quality image manipulation software for free.
I think it's really cool that you're using Linux. :) I first tried
it in 1991 (version 0.12) and have used it as my core operating system
since 1994 with very few regrets.
That said, there have been many times when I've needed to use Windows,
but I really dislike the idea of rebooting my machine out of Linux every
time. I ended up purchasing VMware -- it creates a 'virtual machine'
that runs on top of the base Linux operating system. I can boot up
and use my virtual machine whenever I need to use Windows without exiting
Linux. For all practical purposes it's another whole machine without
having to buy a second system.
They also have a free version now available at
http://www.vmware.com/products/server/
Now my TiVo2Go software can download shows off my TiVo without any manual
interference from me. :) I do still use the virtual machine for Photoshop,
scanning, and color printing, as well as opening the occassional
PowerPoint presentation or typing up a Word document, but I really
prefer Linux.

I had a similar problem with my old HP slide scanner. VueScan (a
commercial package, but only $50) is considered to be one of the best
slide-scanning packages out there. It's available for Windows, MacOS X,
MacOS 9, and Linux at
http://www.hamrick.com/
There is a free trial download, but if I remember correctly it sticks a
watermark on every image until you pay. Once I ponied up the cash all of
my scanning problems were history. The fact that your license works on
any operating system is a huge plus for me, too.
