Blogs & some news
Kitchen Gardeners International's site is built using the blogging software
Movable Type which, as of last week, is open source. We're about to switch
over to the latest version of that software and are giddy with excitement.

I also wanted to share the news that I was recently chosen as a "Food and
Society Fellow". I'm including the press release below. It's the first
time, to my knowledge, that a gardener has been chosen. I'll be looking to
get myself out there media-wise, so keep me and KGI in mind for articles
you're planning, conferences for which you're seeking speakers, radio shows
for which you're seeking guests, etc. I'll be trying to get home gardens
back on the America's cultural landscape, pitching them as the source of the
"localest" food there is. I had a letter to the editor printed in
yesterday's New York Times to that effect, for those interested:

COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute is pleased to
announce that Roger Doiron of Scarborough, Maine, has been awarded a Food &
Society Policy Fellowship for 2008-2009.
The program provides a two-year annual stipend to professionals in food and
agriculture from across North America, enabling them to use mass media
channels to inform public viewpoints in alignment with the goals of creating
sustainable food systems that promote good health, vibrant communities and
environmental stewardship.
Fellows come from many disciplines: chefs, farmers, nutritionists,
activists, public health professionals, fishers, policy experts and
academics. 13 recipients of this prestigious fellowship were selected from a
highly competitive North American group of applicants.
Doiron is the founder and director of Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI),
a nonprofit network of over 4700 home gardeners from 80 countries. KGI
works to empower individuals, families, and communities to achieve greater
levels of food self-reliance through the promotion of kitchen gardening,
home-cooking, and sustainable local food systems. Doiron is also a freelance
writer, photographer and media professional. He has written for a variety of
publications, including the Christian Science Monitor, Chicago Tribune,
Organic Gardening, Mother Earth News and Saveur.
Doiron is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Holy Cross College and holds a Master
of International Relations degree from the Fletcher School of Law and
Diplomacy.
The Jefferson Institute is a nonprofit organization based in Missouri that
conducts agriculture education and research projects. The institute was
founded in 1997.
