Re: Subject: Re: Finding Places To Speak
Wow, this has been a great discussion.
I enjoy the actual speaking part of speaking. I've
been told I'm entertaining and informative. The 2 or
so hours seem to pass in 20 minutes. I love impromptu
audience questions/interaction. It's exciting getting
people excited. And I always learn something from
someone in the audience, too. I'm just burned out on
all the work associated with speaking that isn't part
of the actual "performance."
I also have no problem with something computer-y going
wrong; that's to be expected and I can pretty much fix
most technical issues. What surprises me (and what
grates over time) is how the room is often not set up
with what I requested and there's unnecessary,
easily-avoidable scrambling.
I would also love an assistant who could sell books
and help with visual aids, etc. If my niece didn't
live several states away, she would be ideal. As Lois
suggested, I have asked for help from the organizers,
and they are willing to help carry a box or table, but
I've never been able to arrange for help during a
talk/for sales. Though it would certainly be something
to ask about when negotiating details. I've seen
several speakers who have their husband in tow to do
such things, but that's not an option for me.
