Re: The "Cost" of the matter
From: "Ellen Zachos "Lynn, let me be clear, there's no single price that's

Two things- 1.Hi Ellyn- your video is still making the rounds up here.
2. Hi Lynn, nice website. Not only is there no single
price that's appropriate for everyone, there's no single price appropriate
for even one person, sometimes.
My day-time employer ( a nursery/garden centre selling to both wholesale and
retail customers) believes that having an employee pop over to a garden
club, community event, brown bag day at the library etc. to chat is a
profitable exercise. Writing up and distributing how-to pamphlets falls in
the same category; same for in-house seminars. The charge for this is zero.
I, personally, am paid my regular wages for the time spent doing my
employer's bidding. (I do not have rights to intellectual property)
My other employer (my private company which includes a communications
division) believes that having their one employee pop over to a garden club
etc., is a profitable exercise. Workshops, seminars, free-lance articles and
a syndicated column are all products of Greenscapes. The employer's better
half believes remuneration should pay the bills and earn some decent money.
The charges for these are somewhat dependent on the input costs. (I have
complete rights to intellectual property)
My volunteer employer (a provincial horticultural trade association for
which I volunteer) accepts magazine articles (free), eagerly anticipates a
monthly newsletter(submit invoices for materials used), and cheerfully pays
for seminars and talks (and pays well.) (Some limited rights are granted,
some given , some retained completely.)
What I do, for each of these "employers of my services" is essentially the
same, using the same knowledge and expertise, requiring similar amounts of
personal involvement.
What is the value of those services? How much do I "charge"?
I try to be true to myself and cognizant of my peers, but the "charge" is
all over the map.
