Re: Spam on Blogs

If the comment has nothing to do with my blog entry, I delete it.
Sometimes people just say, "Love this topic," with a link to their own
blog. I don't find that necessarily offensive. I click on every link to
see who the person is (appears to be) and, if it's relevant, I post a
comment on their blog to see whether I can pick up some of their readers.
Works well for some, such as Gardening Gone Wild, but not for others.

When I first started blogging, I kept getting comments from a reader who
I thought was just trying to generate traffic for himself, or was a
spammer. By studying my traffic on Google Analytics, I discovered he was
a regular reader and that I sometimes pick up "referrals" from his blog.
A year later, I discovered everyone on another blog I read regularly
seemed to know him well and loved interacting with him.

I also set up a separate g-mail address and an "e-mail me" button on my
blog. I get about 80 spams a week that go directly into the filter. I get
maybe 2-3 legit e-mails per month and they are always interesting, longer
expositions on someone's experience with one of my blog topics.

I don't get anywhere near Doug's traffic (I assume), so it doesn't take
me long to check out those who comment or e-mail.

Regards,
Lois
