Usually I'm more on the journalistic end of the spectrum as well, but
when I need to add atmosphere, I appeal to all my senses: I have a
leaf or flower at hand if possible, a photo, I think about the
fragrance, whether it makes any sounds, if it's edible or medicinal,
what the leaf texture feels like.
Or I think about anecdotes, where I first learned about the plant,
places I've seen a particular native plant in nature, what memories
it evokes, and let those lead me down interesting paths.
