Mr. Webster doesn't get a vote, though yours is valid. A dictionary does not
set the rules, it merely records how others, especially experts in the
field, are using the word at the time the dictionary was published. I
suppose we are the "experts in the field" so we get to make the rule by our
own usage. Since there is no consensus on house plant/houseplant, use
whichever you like. There is no rule. My spell checker thinks otherwise and
yells at me whenever I use "houseplant" (there, did you hear that?), but I
ignore it.
