Re: subsidies?

In NJ, to obtain a farmland assessment, which is a drastic reduction of
your property tax, you must farm no fewer than five acres and show proof
(receipts) that you have sold at least $500 in farm products per year.
This can mean vegetables, hay, or wood from a forester-certified woodlot.
The $500 figure has remained essentially unchanged since the passage of
the original legislation decades ago.

I have never heard of a home gardener getting this type of subsidy, but
anything is possible.

One of the loopholes that developers use to keep their one-acre lots in
farmland assessment even after a subdivision is complete is that any
contiguous lots that are owned by the same entity (developer) can retain
farmland assessment so long as they remain vacant. For those of us who
are carrying these people on our backs financially, it is outrageous that
they are not made to pay their fair share.

I wholeheartedly support real farmers, who steward large tracts of land
that require minimal services from the township and encourage them to
continue to farm.

Lois
