Raised Beds Fill

Michigan Report

Depending on the size of the beds and the depth of the pockets, top
soil is often used by those who have bucks. Next is reed sedge
( Michigan peat) which is dirt cheap. ( Cheap shot huh?) You can buy
it at Lowes for 2 bucks a bag. It's heavy with humic acid and good for
growing carrots and celery, not good for use with clay. When wet it
turns to muck - yuck. When bone dry it becomes cement. There is a
Hyponex bagging plant about 6 miles from my house. I have heavy clay
soil ( one percent organic matter) and used top soil. Got a good buy
on it from a local grave digger - didn't ask and don't want to know.
Compost is very popular. We have a several communities in suburban
Detroit who banded together and built a commercial composting
facility. Residents get all they want free and the quality is good.
