Re: The End As We Know It - Dan Clost

I wanted to thank Judy Lowe for her comments about writers and the link I
sent last week. Unfortunately, in my zeal to clean off my ipod, I forgot
that when I whapped something there I also took it off gmail. Consequently,
her original post disappeared.

Judy - as I recall - said something to the fact that most writers really
didn't want to be entrepreneurs. This just registered with me in a major
way. It was one of those moments when you said, "I knew that" but hadn't
really brought it into your mainstream thinking. I "knew that" but had
blithely been thinking that if you were a freelancer, you *had* to be an
entrepreneur as well.

But then Dan Clost pointed out (and yeah, again I "knew" this) that most of
the folks on the list weren't really full time garden writers but used it as
a platform or as a income supplement. So I combined these two thoughts and
finally "knew that". ;-)

I've written before about garden writers needing a distribution channel in
order to get their work out. This has always been the case but now you have
a choice - you can use a traditional channel or you can create your own.
But whether you're part time or full time, you need a channel.

If you're not happy with the traditional channels and the amount of money
you're making there - you have to change something. Find a new traditional
channel - find a new way or genre or whatever. Otherwise you're stuck with
doing what I did and that's creating your own channel.

But if most folks really don't depend on this gardening genre for their
income and if most folks don't want to be entrepreneurs, then that changes
the entire nature of the conversation.

According to Judy and Dan then, most of you don't want to do the work to
create your own channel - preferring having somebody else to do that work
and take the risks. And, if somebody else doesn't create a channel you can
use and get paid for - it's not the end of the world because garden writing
isn't your main income source.

So thanks for that thought - - and on that note, I'm going to make another
cup of coffee and head back to designing next year's new website.
