Doug's Fear Quotient
Doug always increases my level of paranoia: that just when I think I've
taken a long step off of a short plank of my digital-world awareness, he
comes along to say that in my total and abject ignorance, I am still miles
behind this constantly racing pack. Yet his posts constantly stimulate me
to stay in the race. Thank this great group.
Recently, we had a GWA Connections gathering at my house. With 32 of my
nearest and dearest fellow travelers/writers/spouses/friends we made a
really shocking discovery. To a person, we had all been challenged to
reinvent ourselves this year. At whatever age, however comfortable our
lifestyle, whichever economic strata, whatever we called our major
occupation, we all changed our world view.
Are we all out of our comfort range? I believe that if you aren't you're
probably dead!
Within that discussion group, we had all tried so much that was new and
different that we felt at a loss to think about what other possible
combinations of trial and error could yet be added to a new Christmas wish
list. But we still all promised to gather again in the new year and tote up
more successes and failures.
Ultimately, what I believe is that networking--social, face-to-face,
business-to-business, association-to-association, young to old, digital to
Gutenberg printing press--is our collective only hope. I will run up a slew
of cliches to confirm that misery loves company, there truly is safety in
numbers, we must all hang together or most assuredly we will all hang
separately. And I take personal and professional strength from this list
and from all of my friends through the great wide green industry. Doug's
latest posts and the responses have only made me determined to get that
Google Droid when I can get two for one after January 1. I may be miles
behind you but I'm running as fast as I can.
And to the rest of us back here in the pack, blessings for this holiday
season and hoping for a more brilliant and successful new year.
Kirk
