adsense on videos

I just went through an interesting process when youtube asked me if I wanted
to put ads on several of my videos.

1) The level of plays that they seem to be targetting is around 25K.  Once
you get that - they ask you.  Before that, they decline to approve your
application.
2) I'm not sure of the rating score they want but there is a one - so your
rating has to be higher than 2-3 stars to get asked
3) It works video by video - just because you have ads on one - doesn't mean
you get ads on all.   So as each video meets the criteria, it gets added to
the list.
4) Approval requires you to state that you own or have the copyright holders
permission to use all images, video and music. And be prepared to document
this.    One of my videos used a clip of intro music from my radio-podcast -
it was less than 10 seconds but when I checked on the rights-holder, it
turned out to be Sony (and not open source from the station).  This means
that none of the video using that clip would likely be approved for ads.  So
make sure you have all rights lined up for every component of the video and
can document it.  Every video is manually checked for all images/copyright
infractions etc.

Bottom line - one video has been approved.  I never even bothered to respond
officially to the other requests using the station clip because once you go
into this process, if your video is found to be misusing copyright material,
it can be deleted from youtube.

I'm not sure what the clickthrough rates or cpm's of the ads are or whether
it's really worth it or not - I'll be running some tests on it now that one
is approved. We'll see.

But bottom line - make sure your video is in compliance with all legal
copyright laws and be prepared to document this.
