Re: GWA Award Musings
How about the same direction, only different? I've thought about entering
my blog for the GWA Awards, but haven't done it. Usually something else
"more important" is going on and I just don't get around to it.
I thought I didn't care much about awards, until I became a proud
recipient of the prestigious national Jefferson Award for community
service, in the environmental category. There were hundreds of attendees
at the cocktail reception, our photos were taken, each recipient's story
was featured in our state-wide newspaper, and we all received gold
(plated) medals. It is a US Presidential award (see
http://www.nj.com/helpinghands/jeffersonawards/index.ssf/2008/08/2008_jef
ferson_award_recipient_4.html if you'd like to be bored to death by my
story or nominate someone from your area). One winner from each state
goes on to a nationwide "competition."
This recognition in a juried setting, by people who understood the
significance of my work, is a constant reminder (especially when the
going is tough) that my environmental advocacy has made a difference.
I think it's a mistake to try to measure awards in dollars. That isn't
why they exist.
>From a business perspective, an award is not going to make or break a
sale. But from a long-term perspective, recognition by one's peers
confers a certain penache and credibility(even if I never heard of you,
your national association thinks you are important, so you must be
somebody) that has a marketing and PR value, if you choose to use it.

Lois
