Re: GWL- variables in GWA awards program

I mentioned variable costs in the awards prgram and then said we didn't know how many judges we would need until all entries were in -- but didn't connect the two.

In the beginning, all entries are judged by two people. So if, at the last minute, too many entries come in for two judges to handle, we can't just add one more judge. You have to add two.

Over the years, we have talked with other organizations that have awards programs to see how they do it -- trying to find a simpler and more cost-effective way -- but our program is larger than any other we found.

I think that I detected some confusion, also, from Graham about blog entries being judged against TV entries, etc. In the first round, all blogs entered in individual categories -- writing, etc. -- are judged on their own merit. Then if an entry is in the top so many percent of its category, it goes on to compete for best writing, best protography, etc., against others in the same category (which may be books, magazines, whatever). But blogs can win awards, just as newspaper columns and magazine photos can.

The overall category is much tougher, since an entry has to be really tops in writing, photography, and design -- and be judged that way by three teams of judges. That's why it seems more for professionals -- magazines, book publishers, etc., who have complete control over all those aspects and put money into them. But anyone who really works on their overall product can enter.

Hope this helps clarify and not confuse even more. :-)

P.S.
I switched away from Rich Text on Yahoo Mail to Plain Text, to see if that gets rid of those annoying ?? every time I hit the enter key. Unfortunately, it now doesn't have spell check, so I apologize for any typos that crept in. As soon as I can figure out how, I'll change to my g-mail account for the list.
