Re: global warming
Global warming is having a huge impact on my own work. Many landscape shrubs, such as junipers, false cypress and cypress, etc. are now blooming twice a year in urban areas....and only ten years ago I almost never saw this. Pollen from many individual plants has been increasing greatly due to the abundance of carbon dioxide now in cities. Then too, global warming effects combined with urban air pollution, mostly from increasing vehicle traffic...this too is having considerable affect, as new evidence shows that particles from air pollution often adhere to airborne pollen grains, causing them to swell and crack. The resulting pollen is much more allergenic than in the past.
In some areas landscape plants that were only root-hardy, but that rarely had a long enough growing season to actually bloom...some of these are now blooming, and if an allergenic species/ or cultivar, are causing new problems, and are extending the length of the pollen season further north than before...a situation that will probably only increase in frequency as global warming increases.

>For my new book, "Gardening in a Warmer World," I would appreciate your current thoughts. Some gardeners view global warming trends with alarm, while others see some new opportunities (for example, late frosts used to get my neighbors' magnolia buds before they could bloom) (citrus up north?!).
