Lois: I  have limited knowledge about - tho great love for - landscaping w trees. However, many gardeners I've interviewed are very happy with their dogwood trees (Cornus florida and Cornus kousa). Not sure about their requirements, but they sure are gorgeous understory trees. Lots of varieties available, all w spring flwrs and some w fall colour. Good luck--let us know what you decide, so we can learn from your experience!
