Re: LS Designers/Plantspeople Suggestions Please


Lois -- I like the idea of a red bud...it is pretty fast growing, great spring blooms, nice form and pale yellow leaves in fall. Maybe a cluster of three would do the trick, or it could be paired with flowering dogwood, but these are slower growing... 

Also you might consider a nice cultivar of honeylocust...small, ferny leaves that allow filtered light, not too may surface roots (a problem w/some maples). Fairly quick growing, too.

I think serviceberry will be too slow...comes in single-trunk tree form and multistem, but is a great four-season plant. Depending on the light, a native magnolia (M. virginiana) might work...it frequently is evergreen in my central Indiana yard. Winter King hawthorn also is a great four-season tree.
