Rather than plant yet another highly allergenic birch tree, why not plant a 
tree that looks somewhat like a birch, but that is way less allergenic and 
every bit as beautiful, or more so?

I'd suggest Prunus serrulata, the Tibetan Cherry (Paperbark Cherry), or 
Prunus maackii 'Amber Beauty'. Both are winter hardy, have attractive white 
spring flowers, grow to a medium size, and add color all season long with 
fabulous looking bark on the trunk.

Lois, My choice would be a River Birch (Betula nigra) also called the
red birch. The cinnamon peeling bark is stunning all year around. It's
a fabulous multi- stemmed tree that can reach 30 to 40 feet in 20
years. Hardy from zones 4 to 9,
it prefers acid soil, but has grown incredibly fast is alkaline clay
here in Michigan. Dirr recommends the 'Heritage'  variety.
